Recent Project - Azure Charitable Enterprises

Location: Cramlington, Northumberland, England

Build type: New Build

Carbon savings: ~ 43 tonnes (estimated over a 25yr lifespan)

Background: Azure provides a wide range of services to people with disabilities throughout the North East of England. Their mission is "Improving the lives of people with disability". Their businesses provide employment to people with various disabilities in a variety of capacities as well as offering an excellent training environment which can assist their employees in their development and progression.

The Azure Garden Centre is one of the charity's businesses. They are extending the café/restaurant facilities by opening the new Café Azure. A ground source heat pump using a horizontal ground collector provides the café with underfloor heating, passive cooling and hot water.

This very attractive building has been designed with both the customer and the environment in mind. As part of Azure's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility the building encompasses many eco friendly features in addition to the ground source heat pump:

  • Timber construction is from sustainable Finnish sources
  • Environmentally friendly timber finishing varnishes
  • Rainwater goods in eco friendly materials
  • Solar Panels
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Main floor covering from natural products

Recent Project - Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre

Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England

Build type: New Build

Carbon savings: ~ 207 tonnes (estimated over a 25yr lifespan)

Background: Boeing and the University of Sheffield have engaged in a multi-million pound partnership with other aerospace companies, including Rolls-Royce, Messier Dowty and Smiths Industries, to develop the 4200m2 purpose built Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) on the site of the old Orgreave Colliery. Inside, researchers will be tasked with translating new ideas into practical manufacturing systems and putting them into the hands of industry. The AMRC's vision is to become a world-class global research facility developing technology solutions for advanced materials manufacture. New materials will be integral in the development of Boeing's new generation planes.
